Do the terms collaterized mortgage obligation, subordinated debenture, and pass-through certificate give you a headache? Do you need to take the Series 6 exam? If you can answer yes to both of these questions, then you’ve come to the right place. Robert Walker, a professional trainer who specializes in the NASD/NASAA Series 6, 63, 65/66, and 7 exams, has written this book for those who are about to brave the Series 6 examination. Armed with an M.F.A. in writing and a B.A. in English, Walker has managed to translate Securities-ese into plain English, with a liberal dash of humor. This must-have book guides you through the intricacies of the Series 6 exam. Walker takes the exam apart piece by piece, and explains terms and concepts with a sense of humor and ease not found in other exam guides. He shows you, step-by-step, how not to be misled by the questions. Pass the 6 includes two complete 100-question practice finals, a handy glossary, a final checklist/studysheet, and even a bonus section on trusts, estates, and gifts, along with its own set of questions. Plus you’ll find that Robert directs you to his web site, where he offers updates, downloads, and other helpful information. Once you’ve finished this book, you will be able to take the test with confidence!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great Review Book
To say this study guide book can completely replace the study materials provided by employers is a stretch, but it’s safe to say that this book helped reinforce tested information.

By the time a new book is out, regulations have changed. Because this book was published in 2006, it’s a good study guide for basic knowledge but not all of the specifics are still valid in 2009. As I read my employer’s study material, the Series 6 preparation class materials and this book, the rules are changing around me: Tax figures have changed, retirement plan rules have changed and mortgage-backed securities are a joke.

Luckily, the test doesn’t nitpick and I still passed even with using slightly dated study materials.

If I ever see Robert Walker on the streets of Manhattan, I owe him a beer! We English majors turned registered reps have to stick together.

5 Stars GREAT BOOK - EASY TO READ - PASSED THE FIRST TRY
I wanted to write and thank Mr. Walker for writing this book. I worked in Healthcare IT and have a master’s degree so I’ve taken lots of tests in my life …. the series 6 is the most difficult I’ve taken. However with Mr. Walker’s material I passed the first time studying only 3 weeks and taking weekends off. He makes very boring material interesting and you will catch yourself laughing out loud sometimes as his humor. If you want to pass the first or next time you take the series 6 this is a must read.

5 Stars Use this one to pass!!!
I recently decided it was time to pursue a new career in financial services and in order to do so I needed to pass the Series Six. This is not very easy, in fact, I didn’t think I could pass. I failed on the first try and figured I needed something that would help someone like me who has never done this stuff and doesn’t speak this languge. In the past, I usually tuned out financial talk.

I got a copy of Pass the 6 because it looked like it was in the language I speak…”human.” It was, and it was even funny at times too. Guess what? I passed with flying colors today!!!

The book also covers things that will really be on the test. The other book I used on my first try helped me with about 60 percent of the questions that are actually on the test.

The author acutally answered a few of my questions through e-mail. That’s a first!!! I’ve never been able to chat with the author while I’m reading his book. I really got the sense he genuinely wanted me to pass.

Bottom line, this is the one that will get you the 70 or above you need to pass. The others may, but this one will. I knew none of this before and now I feel like Warren Buffett Jr.!!!

5 Stars An absolute lifesaver
I consider myself kind of a smart guy, but the Kaplan materials made my brain hurt. I was really suffering through my studying. Then along comes this book with tidbits such as this:

“a variable annuity is really just a mutual fund investment that grows tax deferred.”

Oh yeah. Now that makes sense. Why couldn’t the competitor products state this so clearly? I read page after page of competitor materials and didn’t REALLY understand what an annuity was until I read that one simple sentence I quoted above.

This book is full of this sort of thing. Everything explained so you can actually understand it.

Bottom line: I got a 92 on my Series 6. I’m happy I got this guide.

5 Stars I know I will pass after reading this book.
I’m very happy with the book I received. The information is written in clear, understandable terms. The author discusses what is on the series 6 test and uses examples and humor to help with understanding the concepts, as well as, practice tests. I know I will be able to pass the test after reading this book.

David Ford has been in the life insurance business for more than thirty years. It seemed natural. David’s father was in the life insurance business and his grandfather was in the life insurance business.

The world needs insurance, and people in advanced societies particularly need life insurance. But they often don’t think they do, making the job of the life insurance agent difficult and challenging. After all, who wants to think about dying?

The world of life insurance is changing. The policies that were commonly sold by most insurance companies thirty years ago are now out of favor. The universal use of the computer has changed our world, and the life insurance industry has become a part of that revolution. Ford’s perspective going back over thirty years gives the reader not only a history of life insurance practices, but points to trends and problems facing the industry in the present and for the future.

Ford has been an agent in the field, fighting for client leads and doing his share of cold calling. His career advanced up the ladder to the home office where he held several administrative positions as well as working diligently to recruit and train new agents for the profession that he learned to love and respect.

Ford treasures the personal relationships he has made over the years, and it is obvious from his writing that his human warmth and sense of humor pervade his writing and his life. If you are thinking of a career in the life insurance business, Ford’s book should be required reading. And if you’ve been in the life insurance business for a few decades, you will want to run, not walk, to get this book. You’ll nod your head and chuckle as you read.

5 Stars A Fun, Insightful Book
This is a humorous yet philosophical memoir covering over thirty years in the insurance profession. The author has tried his hand at several different positions, as an agent, a manager, and many home office management positions, and every stop is described with clever wit and humor. I really enjoyed reading this book, and could definitely relate to his experiences and insights. I think anyone who’s considering this profession or has been involved in it for any amount of time should read this book!

5 Stars Great Book!
This is definitely NOT a typical business book! It doesn’t contain any of the usual cliches or how-to-sell bromides found in most others;instead, it’s a funny book about the insurance industry that is informative as well. This book reveals a lot about a business that I knew very little about, yet it reads like a memoir. Not to sound trite, but I got to some parts and couldn’t put the book down until I finished! I laughed out loud at some of the experiences he has had through the years, and I think that anyone who has been in the business for any amount of time will really appreciate the insights. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, which are very appropriate for the content and fun. This really was an enjoyable book!

5 Stars A fun and engaging read. Can’t wait for more from this author!
Wow! What a great first novel! I can’t remember the last time I read a novel and was so disappointed when it ended — I wanted to keep reading. The characters are well developed and Ms. Poliner’s writing style is just a delight to read. An added bonus is that I live in central Connecticut so I recognized many of the landmarks (I too have been in the now defunct Loehmann’s communal dressing rooms!). I’ve already bought several copies for holiday gifts. I’m looking forward to Ms. Poliner’s next novel!

5 Stars Could Not Stop Reading
From the time I bought it till I finished I read at every available moment. I was sad that there was no more to read when I finished.

I hope there will be more books coming by this author. The scenes and action are vividly described with every nuance and emotion captured in words. I feel I know Hannah and Carolyn and all the other characters.
